In a list created by The Telegraph, they highlighted the UK's cities that "heralded the festive season"

Adding that the locations offer the "glitter we need in what can seem a gloomy world."

Among the list of 10 cities were the likes of Bath, Chester, Cardiff, York and St Albans

St Albans was named the best city to visit for festive entertainment by The Telegraph.

Sharing why the Hertfordshire spot made the list, The Telegraph wrote: "For a less-crowded Christmas break, head for Hertfordshire, where St Albans offers medieval charm, cosy pubs and plenty of entertainment.

"Sink into the plush seats of the art deco Odyssey Cinema to watch Christmas classics; catch an open-air production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in the walled Vintry Garden (Dec 5-30); or enjoy Carols on the Hour (Dec 13), where choirs belt out songs in St Albans’ venerable cathedral."

It wasn't just St Albans' entertainment that earned it praise, with the city's market, pubs and hotels celebrated.

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks offers traditional pub grub including sausages and mash, burgers, curry and its Sunday roast dinner.

On Google Reviews, the pub has an impressive 4.5 rating out of 5 from more than 2,670 reviews.

One recent guest said: "As the title suggests, an olde worlde pub set just behind the cathedral in St Albans with a cracking atmosphere."
