Trump's new 'prosecutor' Lindsay Halligan embroiled in scandal just weeks after appointment
New interim U.S. Attorney Lindsay Halligan is accused of violating Virginia State Bar rules, raising questions about her qualifications.
Shortly after her appointment, Halligan attempted to prosecute James Comey and Letitia James, allegedly acting on Trump's orders, even though her career officials deemed these cases untenable.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is also under scrutiny for unfulfilled promises related to the Epstein files, increasing pressure on the Trump administration.
Lindsay Halligan is the new interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, despite questions about her qualifications for the position. Interestingly, she already knew both Donald Trump and Erica Kirk before taking office. After taking office in September, Halligan had a rocky start, and just a few months later, she is now embroiled in her own scandals.
The Campaign for Accountability has filed formal charges against Halligan, claiming she violated the Virginia State Bar's ethics rules. The charge runs approximately 20 pages and was submitted to the Florida and Virginia state bars on November 11.
The group described Halligan's conduct as detrimental to the integrity of the Department of Justice. The cited line states, "Ms. Halligan's actions appear to be an abuse of power and serve to undermine the integrity of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and undermine public confidence in the legal profession and the fair administration of justice," according to CBS News.
Recent moves by his office surprised people. Halligan replaced Eric Seibert, who resigned after New York Attorney General Letitia James refused to file charges. Trump later claimed in a Truthout social media post that Seibert "didn't resign, I fired him! Next time, let him go as a Democrat, not a Republican." Trump's comments indicate that he will label anyone who doesn't listen to him as a Democrat.
Halligan's swift action has drawn criticism. The complaint argues that she took this action after career officials found the cases untenable. According to a CBS News report, "Ms. Halligan was well aware that President Trump had appointed her as interim U.S. Attorney specifically to prosecute Mr. Comey and Ms. James, and within days of taking office, she did exactly that—even though her superiors found these cases untenable."
They further stated, "The evidence demonstrates that without President Trump's intervention, neither Mr. Comey nor Ms. James would have been prosecuted."
Just days after Halligan's appointment, a new indictment was filed against James Comey for alleged bank fraud. The timeline shows that Halligan took office, then quickly moved to prosecute both Comey and James, making it clear that she acted on Trump's orders.
While Halligan is now facing legal turmoil over her own actions, another Trump administration official, United States Attorney General Pam Bondi, is also facing a difficult time due to the renewed scrutiny of the Epstein files. Bondi had previously claimed she would make the files public because they were sitting ready on her desk.
However, the Justice Department later stated that a full release of the files was neither possible nor necessary. This lack of transparency and Bondi's failure to keep her promise caused significant political turmoil, including dissension within the MAGA movement.
Claims about Trump's ties to Epstein have been circulating, but the president and his administration have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
With the release of a set of new emails that shed further light on Epstein's files, Bondi is now under immense pressure to address public demands for the files' release in a way that saves his job and doesn't jeopardize the president's reputation.
