In an official notice, the department urged U.S. citizens to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrolment Program (STEP), a free service that provides real-time security alerts, travel advisories, and critical updates from U.S. embassies and consulates.
How Americans Can Stay Informed
Officials are encouraging travellers and residents to sign up at step.state.gov to receive timely alerts tailored to their location. Enrolment also helps U.S. embassies contact citizens more quickly in emergencies, including natural disasters, civil unrest, or other security incidents.
The State Department also advised Americans to monitor updates from TravelGov for official guidance and to maintain up-to-date contact information while abroad.
Emergency Assistance Available 24/7
For immediate help, U.S. citizens can contact the State Department’s Operations Center around the clock at +1-202-501-4444, according to the advisory.
Consular officials stress that staying informed and prepared is essential, particularly during periods of regional instability.
The advisory underscores ongoing efforts by U.S. authorities to keep Americans abroad connected, informed, and supported during evolving security situations.
