Edwards leaves Championship team Middlesbrough, where he joined as head coach in June, and is now taking charge at Molineux.

Wolves sacked Pereira on November 2, and after Boro rejected their offer to speak to Edwards, last week they were granted permission to speak to the 42-year-old Pereira after the two clubs agreed on a compensation deal.

Edwards, who previously managed Luton Town in the Premier League, played 111 matches for Wolves between 2004 and 2008.

Edwards leaves Middlesbrough in second place in the Championship table, five points behind leaders Coventry City.

Meanwhile, Wolves are languishing at the bottom of the top flight after a poor start to the season, picking up just two points from their opening 11 league matches.

Edwards will be joined at Wolves by Harry Watling, who will take on the role of assistant head coach and was part of his team at the Riverside Stadium.

Sources have also told Sport that Paul Trollope, Joleon Lescott, and Conor Coady have been approached for potential roles in Edwards' new backroom staff.

Lescott and Coady are considered difficult to replace as potential new members, especially Coady, who still plays for Wrexham.

Boro confirmed in a statement that Adi Vivash will continue to manage the main team while the club searches for a new manager.

It added: "Rob signed a three-year contract with us in the summer, but when he made it clear he was keen to join Wolves, we reluctantly agreed a salary increase for both him and Harry Watling, one of their first-team coaches.

"On Saturday, the Riverside players, staff, and supporters came together, and you could feel the spirit of unity that is at the core of our club. We would like to thank everyone involved."

Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shea said Edwards had shown "tactical awareness" as a youth coach at the club.

"Since joining the first team, he has begun to develop his identity, character, and leadership abilities," Shea added.

"[Rob] is a very good person, he knows the club very well, he knows the city, the fans, and he is very talented."
