The Faro District Commander (Rescue Operations) told a press conference that two other people were seriously injured and three others suffered minor injuries at the Albufeira Camping Park in the Algarve.

He added that the nearby Eden Resort was also hit by the storm on Saturday morning, with 23 people suffering minor injuries.

The National Meteorological Office (IPMA) said it was assessing whether a tornado had struck the area, as radar images indicate a high probability.

The IPMA further stated that it was difficult to predict when and where a tornado might strike.

Videos filmed at the campsite showed downed trees, debris strewn across the ground, and vehicles with broken windows.

Portugal's National Medical Emergency Institute reported that the 28 injured at both locations in Albufeira included six children aged between two months and seven years and 23 adults aged between 24 and 70.

Daniel Gama, managing director of the Eden Resort, said: "There was absolute chaos, people were flying around inside the restaurant.

"There were many heroes [among the staff]. Some people were injured while protecting children."

UK Europe Minister Stephen Doughty said the Foreign Office was monitoring the situation and would assist any British citizens stranded by the storm.

"My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased British woman and to those injured," he said in a post on X.

Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also expressed his "heartfelt condolences" to the deceased woman's family and wished the injured a "speedy recovery."

Portugal's Civil Protection Department responded "with full commitment and as quickly as possible," he wrote in a post on X. He added: "Unfortunately, serious consequences could not be avoided."

Portugal and parts of neighboring Spain have been severely affected by Hurricane Claudia over the past two days. Rescue workers reported that an elderly couple died in Lisbon on Thursday after their home was flooded.

Continuous rain lashed Faro, Setúbal, and Beja in southern Portugal on Saturday. An orange warning for rain, with heavy rain and thundershowers at times, has been issued, according to the IPMA website.
