Concerns Grow After Village GP Surgery Announces Closure
A general practitioner (GP) surgery in Staffordshire is set to close in a few months after the current operators decided to terminate their contract.
An NHS spokesperson said they are working to ensure patients at Betley Surgery, located near Newcastle-under-Lyme, have "continued access to high-quality local healthcare."
Meanwhile, local MP Adam Jogee said he would meet with senior NHS officials to discuss the issue.
He said, "Access to a local general practitioner is extremely important, and residents of Betley should continue to receive primary care close to home."
Sarah Jeffery, director of primary care for NHS Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board (ICB), said she is committed to ensuring patients receive the care they need.
He said, "The current contract holders at Betley Surgery have decided to terminate their contract on March 31, 2026, for personal reasons, and the building will no longer be available after that date."
"We are working closely with our partners to ensure patients continue to receive high-quality local healthcare, and we are requesting patients to share their views through a short survey to help shape future arrangements."
This online survey will be open until 23:00 GMT on November 30, 2025, and hard copies will also be available at the surgery's reception.
'Worrying news'
"Although services will continue as normal until March 2026, this will be worrying news for residents who rely on the surgery for essential healthcare," Mr. Jogi said.
"I will meet with the primary care team at ICB as soon as possible to push for a clear plan for continued general practitioner (GP) provision.
"I will do everything possible to protect local health services and ensure residents' voices are heard throughout this process."
