Eight people were killed and 24 injured in a car explosion near the Red Fort on Monday evening, officials said.

The explosion occurred in a Hyundai i20 car near the Red Fort Metro station at 6:52 a.m., leaving mutilated bodies and damaged cars scattered across the busy area.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters, "The explosion occurred in a slow-moving car that was stopped at the Red Fort traffic signal. The car was carrying people. The explosion damaged nearby cars."

A high alert has been issued in Delhi. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) stated that police have cordoned off the area and 20 fire engines have reached the spot.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad and the Special Cell of the Delhi Police are present at the scene to assess the situation.

Visuals from the incident show smoke rising from burning cars. A panic-stricken area thronged with people.

The explosion occurred hours after the Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered approximately 3,000 kilograms of explosives from two residential buildings in Faridabad, Haryana.

The explosive material, including 350 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, a commonly used fertilizer that can be converted into a deadly bomb, was seized based on intelligence received from arrested Jammu and Kashmir doctor Adil Rather.
