The British Geological Survey (BGS) reported that a 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck northwest England on Wednesday night, shaking homes.
The tremor, which struck just after 10:23 p.m., was felt across Lancashire and the southern Lake District, including the towns of Kendal and Ulverston, which were within 12 miles of the epicenter.

According to the data, the earthquake struck near the coast of Silverdale, Lancashire, at a depth of 1.86 miles. There were no immediate reports of damage.
People reported that it "felt like an underground explosion" and was "so powerful it shook the entire house."

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said that "many people felt or heard a loud bang" in the Carnforth area, 18 miles north of Lancaster.
Lancaster Police also said they had received reports of a "loud explosion" in the area. The force said that "a mild 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck the area, near the Lancashire and Cumbria border."

It added: "There are no reports of injuries or damage, but our officers, along with colleagues from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service, are in the area."
The Volcano Discovery website said it had received more than 1,000 reports of the earthquake, some from as far away as Blackpool.

A resident in Carnforth posted on the site: "Heard a rumbling sound that turned into a loud bang. Thought my roof was falling in! Very scary."
Another in Silverdale posted: "Loud rumbling and rattling of fixtures in the house, as if something had fallen or the chimney had collapsed. So loud I had to go outside to check."

The BGS detects around 300 earthquakes in the UK each year, but only a tenth of these are felt or heard by people.
