Elon Musk Reveals $200B Shocking Zombie Payment Leak

In a recent interview on The Katie Miller Podcast, Elon Musk made a striking claim about large-scale government inefficiencies—suggesting that the U.S. may be losing up to $200 billion every year due to what he calls “zombie payments.”

Elon Musk says the idea began almost jokingly. The so-called “Department of Government Efficiency,” or DOGE, was formed around a name suggested on the internet—originally starting as what Musk called The Government Efficiency Commission. Eventually, it evolved into a project aimed at cutting unnecessary government spending.

When asked whether this department was successful, Musk said they achieved “somewhat” meaningful results. According to him, DOGE targeted federal payments that had no clear purpose, no proper code, or no explanation for why they were being sent out.

Musk claims the team discovered what he refers to as zombie payments—funds that continue to be disbursed automatically, even when they serve no purpose. He estimates these payments may total between $100 billion and $200 billion per year.

He says many of these could be stopped simply by enforcing a basic rule: requiring every payment to include a valid payment code and explanation. Adjustments were reportedly made to key Treasury systems to prevent such payments from going out.

But Musk admits the problem is far from solved. He says these zombie payments may represent just two to three percent of total government disbursements—and stopping them is complicated, partly because, as Musk puts it, “very few people would ask the government to stop sending them money.”

The clip cuts off before Musk finishes the thought, but the claim has already sparked significant debate online about waste, oversight, and government accountability.

The discussion around DOGE and Musk’s claims is ongoing, with many calling for more transparency and verification of the numbers. For now, the comments have reignited public interest in how government funds are allocated—and how much may be slipping through the cracks.
