A major diplomatic breakthrough has been announced in Southeast Asia, as leaders from Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following a dangerous escalation in their long-running conflict.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he held what he described as a “very good conversation” this morning with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutan Carnivals, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, amid renewed fighting between the two neighbouring countries.

According to Trump, both leaders have agreed to cease all shooting effective this evening and to return to the original peace accord previously negotiated with his involvement, alongside mediation efforts led by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The recent violence was sparked by a roadside bomb that killed and wounded several Thai soldiers. Trump stated the explosion was an accident, though Thailand responded with strong military retaliation, raising concerns that the situation could spiral into a wider regional conflict.

Trump said both Thailand and Cambodia have now expressed readiness to pursue peace and to continue trade relations with the United States, signalling a desire to restore stability and economic cooperation in the region.

In his statement, Trump praised the role of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, calling his assistance critical in helping bring the two sides back to the negotiating table.

Trump added that it was an honour to work with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to resolve what he said could have evolved into a major war between “two otherwise wonderful and prosperous countries.”

If the ceasefire holds, the agreement could mark a significant step toward de-escalation and renewed diplomacy in Southeast Asia. We will continue to follow developments closely.
