A report has found that a major fire on a cargo ship was "likely caused by a failed battery discharge or another ignition source."
Nearby roads and businesses were closed as a "hazardous cloud" hung over the local area, while firefighters battled the blaze day and night.

An investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) found that "the scrap cargo contained hazardous materials such as batteries, oil drums, and oily residue, posing a fire risk."

The report further stated that the cargo was collected from multiple sources and that the company handling the scrap, The Griffiths Group Limited, "expected its suppliers to remove flammable materials and hazardous materials such as batteries from their products."

The MAIB stated that the firm has ceased trading following the incident.
No one was injured in the incident, although the ship was damaged and requires repairs.
The MAIB said the fire highlighted the "importance of cargo loading monitoring and cargo pre-loading inspection".
