Italy Avalanche Claims Five Lives, Including Father and Daughter

According to rescue teams, five German mountaineers, including a 17-year-old girl and her father, died in an avalanche in the Italian Dolomites.

 The mountaineers, traveling in separate groups, were climbing Cima Vertana in the Ortler Alps on Saturday at around 4:00 p.m. local time when a fast-moving snowstorm struck.

 Italy's Alpine Rescue Service, Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico, said that one group of three people was "completely swept away by the avalanche" and all three died.

 Separately, a father and daughter were also swept away by the avalanche, and their bodies were recovered on Sunday. Two other mountaineers from a third group survived.

 The survivors raised the alarm, triggering the rescue operation.
