According to officials, the driver who crashed his vehicle into a large Jewish temple in Michigan on Thursday afternoon has died.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters that the suspect drove his vehicle through the doors of the Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield and proceeded down a hallway before the vehicle caught fire.

Temple security guards opened fire on the suspect as he approached and subsequently confronted him inside the temple. Law enforcement officials stated that one security guard, who was struck by the vehicle, is currently being treated at a hospital and is expected to recover.

The FBI stated that the incident is being investigated as a "premeditated act of violence against the Jewish community."

Bouchard reported that 30 police officers were hospitalized after suffering from smoke inhalation caused by a "massive fire" that engulfed the building. He added that the cause of the fire would only be determined following an investigation.

Temple Israel—one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues in the United States—also houses a preschool, from which dozens of children had to be safely evacuated during the incident.

Jennifer Runyon, a Special Agent with the FBI's Detroit field office, described the incident as "extremely disturbing and tragic."

Sheriff Bouchard characterized the crime as a "heinous and horrific act," though he did not elaborate on any specific motive behind it.

"We know that evil exists in the world," Bouchard said during a press conference on Thursday evening. "When such evil manifests, that is the true test of our training and preparedness."

In an earlier briefing, Bouchard stated, "Everything that was supposed to happen, happened." He added, "The security guards performed their duties admirably, and subsequently, the emergency response teams did their job." The police have not yet disclosed how the suspect died; nor has his identity been made public. Bouchard stated that determining the cause of the suspect's death is difficult because his vehicle had caught fire.

"At this time, we cannot say what caused his death," he said. "However, security guards did fire shots at the suspect."

He further explained that officers are inspecting the suspect's vehicle for any explosives, exercising "extreme caution."

State and local law enforcement agencies, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), took immediate action to respond to this emergency situation.

Speaking at an event held at the White House on Thursday, Trump said he wanted to "send his love and support to Michigan's Jewish community and all the people of Detroit." "It is a very terrible thing," he added.

Lisa Stern, a member of Temple Israel for over 20 years, rushed to the scene in her car upon receiving news of the attack. She was concerned about her friends inside, including two rabbis and a social worker.

However, she said she decided against messaging them to ask if they were safe, fearing that the "ping" sound of an incoming message could potentially reveal their location. Initially, the incident was described as an "active shooter event."

Waiting across the street, Stern recounted seeing many distraught parents and grandparents arriving at the scene, desperate to confirm whether their children—who attend the pre-school located there—were safe.

"Initially, when they had no information, parents were collapsing to the ground," she said. "Thankfully, just a few minutes later, they were informed that the children were safe." Temple Israel issued a statement on Facebook, announcing that students had been evacuated from the premises and taken to a nearby country club. According to the statement, the school's 140 students—along with "our excellent staff, our brave teachers, and our courageous security personnel"—are all safe and have been accounted for.

Stern further remarked that he believes the suspect who carried out the attack possessed prior knowledge of the temple, noting that the building is not visible from the street.

"They clearly knew where they were going," he said, "because they knew exactly where they could inflict the most damage."

Stern noted that security guards are always stationed at the temple, and security measures have been further heightened since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. Since the start of that conflict, the United States has witnessed a surge in incidents of antisemitism.

Additionally, Bouchard stated that for the past two weeks—specifically since the commencement of military operations in Iran—law enforcement agencies have been in constant contact with this synagogue and other nearby places of worship.

On Thursday afternoon, Jewish communities and organizations across the state took additional security precautions, while the Michigan State Police increased patrols at other Jewish sites. Meanwhile, police presence was also stepped up around Jewish centers in several major U.S. cities.
