At least 108 people have been killed in an explosion at a school in southern Iran, according to a local prosecutor.

This occurred after the US and Israel launched massive airstrikes on the country.

President Masoud Pezeshkian said it was a "barbaric act" and "another black page in the record of countless crimes of the attackers." Neither Western country has confirmed the attack on the school - it is near a base of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, which was targeted in the attacks.

The Iranian Red Crescent said the airstrikes killed at least 201 people across the country and injured 747.

Red Cross and Red Crescent officials in Geneva said the society had sent response teams to the school after the incident.

An official said the school in the city of Minab in Hormozgan province was "targeted by three missile attacks."

It is about 600m (1968ft) from the IRGC base.

The BBC has verified clips of the blast's aftermath, showing smoke rising from a building, a crowd gathered nearby, and people screaming in panic.

But it has not been able to verify the death toll itself – international news organizations are often denied visas to Iran, severely limiting their ability to gather information there.

Iranian social media users have reacted angrily to the news of the incident.

An Iranian living abroad who opposes military intervention in Iran commented: "The first victims of this war are 40 girls in Minab, who were hit by a missile. Are you happy about this war?"

However, deep trust in the Iranian government makes it difficult for many to believe official reports, and some Iranians have directly blamed the government for the attack.

One user wrote: "Even if the government did not directly target schools, the Islamic Republic bears responsibility for the deaths of children in Minab."

"People have nowhere to live, the internet is cut off, phone lines are down, and no warning has been issued to keep children away from school. In these circumstances, the minimum requirement should be to stay home."

The school incident occurred after the US and Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on targets in several Iranian cities on Saturday.

Despite US President Donald Trump's statement that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei—along with several of his senior commanders—was killed in the initial strikes, the attacks are set to continue.
