The blackout struck during peak hours, knocking out traffic lights across major intersections and causing widespread gridlock throughout downtown corridors, residential neighborhoods, and key commuter routes. Emergency crews rushed to manage intersections as frustrated drivers faced delays stretching for miles.
Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) confirmed the outage, saying the disruption was caused by a failure within the city’s electrical infrastructure. While crews were dispatched immediately, officials warned that restoration could take several hours as engineers assessed the extent of the damage.
Public transportation systems were also impacted. Several Muni rail lines were temporarily suspended, and delays rippled across bus routes struggling to navigate traffic-clogged streets. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) reported brief service interruptions before switching to backup power systems.
Hospitals and critical facilities switched to emergency generators, while businesses across the city were forced to shut down operations. Restaurants, offices, and retail stores went dark, leaving thousands of workers sent home early.
Residents reported elevators stuck mid-floor, ATMs offline, and mobile phone service becoming unreliable as networks strained under the surge. Grocery stores and gas stations were unable to operate without power, prompting concerns about access to essentials if outages continued.
City officials urged residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary and asked people to conserve phone battery power. Police increased patrols in affected neighborhoods to manage traffic and ensure public safety.
Mayor London Breed released a statement acknowledging the disruption and assuring residents that restoring power remained the city’s top priority. “We understand the frustration and concern this outage has caused. Our teams are working around the clock to restore services safely and as quickly as possible,” the statement said.
By late evening, PG&E reported that power had been restored to parts of the city, though tens of thousands remained in the dark. The utility company said a full investigation would be conducted once service is fully restored to determine the cause and prevent future outages.
The blackout once again raises questions about the resilience of San Francisco’s aging infrastructure, especially as the city faces growing demands from extreme weather, population density, and increased energy consumption.
Officials said further updates would be provided as restoration efforts continue.
