WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump issued a forceful statement on Monday accusing Mexico of violating a long-standing water treaty and harming Texas farmers by withholding critical water supplies owed to the United States.

In a social media post, Trump said Mexico has failed to comply with the 1944 water treaty for the past five years and currently owes the U.S. more than 800,000 acre-feet of water. He stated that American officials have asked Mexico to release 200,000 acre-feet before December 31, with the remaining balance to be delivered “immediately.”

“So far, Mexico has not responded, and this is deeply unfair to our U.S. farmers who are entitled to this much-needed water,” Trump wrote, calling the impact on Texas crops and livestock “significant harm.”

Trump added that he has approved documentation to impose a 5% tariff on Mexico if the water is not released without delay. “The longer Mexico delays releasing water, the greater the harm to our farmers,” he said, arguing that Mexico has a responsibility to act now.

The dispute comes amid ongoing tensions over cross-border resources, with Texas agriculture groups warning of worsening conditions if water deliveries are not restored soon.
