Thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed in the United States as a major snowstorm is expected to hit the Northeast during the peak holiday travel season.

According to flight tracking website FlightAware, more than 1,600 flights across the US had been canceled and 7,400 delayed by Friday night.

The airports most affected are John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia, all in the New York area. Boston, Chicago, and Toronto, Canada, were also impacted.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning from 4:00 PM local time Friday (21:00 GMT) to 1:00 PM Saturday, with up to nine inches (23 cm) of snow expected in New York and southern Connecticut.

JetBlue Airways canceled 229 flights, while Delta Air Lines canceled 241. Republic Airways and Southwest Airlines canceled 180 and 151 flights, respectively. American Airlines and United Airlines also canceled approximately 100 scheduled flights each.

On social media, airports advised travelers to contact their airlines for updates on their flight status.

The heaviest snowfall was expected between 6:00 PM local time (23:00 GMT) and midnight. Drivers were warned of hazardous conditions and advised to carry emergency supply kits.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said people should avoid non-essential travel, but if they must travel, they should "plan ahead, drive slowly, and allow plenty of time to get to their destination safely."

The governors of New Jersey and Connecticut issued similar warnings.

This would be the second major snowfall of the season for New York City, which saw several inches of snow on December 14. Mayor Eric Adams on Friday urged commuters to leave early or consider using public transportation to get home.

Snowplows had been deployed and were ready to begin clearing the roads once two inches of snow had accumulated.
