Tasmania Police have confirmed that remains found last month near Philosopher's Falls in the state have been provisionally identified as those of missing Belgian tourist Celine Kramer.
 
Police said on Friday morning that expert reports provided "strong evidence" that the remains were likely those of Celine Kramer, and expressed their condolences to her family, who have been awaiting confirmation of the discovery since being alerted to the discovery.

Search teams achieved a major breakthrough in January when a bushwalker discovered bones in a section of the Arthur River, approximately 2 km from the tourist's last known location.
 
Further searches in the vicinity uncovered five bones, teeth, a Honda car key, and some clothing items.
 
The latest breakthrough occurred in an area of ​​dense bushland that police had only surveyed by helicopter in previous searches.

"While this provisional confirmation will not ease their loss, we hope the result will provide them with some clarity and closure," Nathan Johnston, a commander with Tasmania Police, said on Friday. "We would like to thank community members for their continued support and interest in Celine's case, and I would also like to acknowledge the immense efforts of search and rescue personnel, partner agencies, and volunteers who donated considerable time and resources during the multiple search phases."
 
A report is being prepared for the coroner, who will officially identify the remains.
