ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) — President Donald Trump said Sunday that U.S. intelligence officials have concluded Ukraine did not target a residence belonging to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a drone incident last week — directly contradicting explosive claims made by the Kremlin.

Trump’s remarks mark a sharp reversal from his initial reaction, when he expressed anger and concern after Russian officials accused Kyiv of launching drones at Putin’s state residence in Russia’s northwestern Novgorod region.

“Something happened nearby,” Trump told reporters as he flew back to Washington after spending two weeks at his Florida residence. “But we don’t believe that strike happened. Now that we’ve been able to check, we don’t believe that happened.”

Kremlin Claims Sparked Alarm

The allegation originated with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who claimed Ukraine launched a wave of drones aimed at Putin’s residence — an assertion Moscow said Russian air defenses successfully thwarted.

Lavrov also accused Ukraine of escalating tensions at a sensitive moment, as negotiations were intensifying to end the war.

The claim surfaced just one day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Trump in Florida to discuss the administration’s evolving 20-point plan aimed at securing a ceasefire and ending the conflict. Zelenskyy quickly denied the accusation.

Trump Walks Back Earlier Reaction

Initially, Trump appeared to take the Russian claims seriously. Last Monday, he told reporters that Putin raised the alleged attack during a phone call between the two leaders and said he was “very angry” about the situation.

However, by midweek, Trump publicly began distancing himself from Moscow’s account. He shared a New York Post editorial questioning the Kremlin’s credibility and accusing Putin of choosing “lies, hatred, and death” at a time Trump has repeatedly said peace is “closer than ever.”

European officials have also dismissed the allegation, suggesting it was an attempt by Moscow to derail peace talks and undermine negotiations.

Peace Efforts Face Growing Strain

Trump has struggled to fulfill his campaign promise to quickly end the war in Ukraine and has shown frustration with both leaders as negotiations drag on.

Despite last week’s meeting at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump and Zelenskyy both said progress was made, the Kremlin has signaled little willingness to compromise.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to insist on sweeping demands — including full control over Ukraine’s industrial Donbas region and strict limits on Ukraine’s post-war military size and weapons.

A Fragile Moment

With U.S. intelligence now disputing Russia’s drone claim, the episode underscores how misinformation and escalating rhetoric continue to threaten fragile diplomatic efforts.

As Trump presses ahead with mediation, the question remains whether Moscow and Kyiv are truly ready to end a war now entering yet another critical phase.
