In a statement released this week, Trump praised Ellington’s background as a businessman, retired firefighter, horse farmer, former state representative, and Greene County GOP chairman, highlighting his long record of community service and conservative leadership.
The endorsement sharply criticized incumbent Eric Bassler, accusing him of betraying Republican voters by opposing Indiana’s redistricting effort — a move Trump said ultimately benefited Democrats and threatened Republican control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Trump argued that Indiana became the only state where Republican infighting during redistricting cost the party potential congressional gains. He blamed Bassler and other establishment Republicans for what he described as a failure to fight back against Democratic political strategies.
The statement also took aim at Indiana Senate leadership, naming Rod Bray and a new challenger, Kristi Risk, whom Trump described as unreliable and absent during key political battles. According to Trump, Risk’s comments downplaying the importance of maintaining the House majority raised serious concerns among Republican voters.
By contrast, Trump described Ellington as a proven conservative who will “never let voters down,” pledging support for policies focused on tax cuts, regulatory reform, American energy dominance, election integrity, Second Amendment protections, and strong backing for farmers, veterans, and law enforcement.
The endorsement underscores growing tensions within Indiana’s Republican Party, as grassroots voters increasingly challenge long-time incumbents they view as insufficiently aligned with America First priorities.
With the primary race shaping up as a referendum on party direction, Trump’s backing of Ellington is expected to play a decisive role in mobilizing conservative voters across the district.
