The Apple News app, pre-installed on iPhones and used by millions worldwide, is facing heightened scrutiny over allegations of political bias after a recent analysis suggested its curated news content may favor liberal sources.

A study by the conservative-leaning Media Research Center examined Apple News’ featured stories over a recent month and found that a large majority originated from outlets classified as left-leaning, with few from centrist sources and none from conservative ones.

Apple News’ editorial content is overseen by a team of journalists led by Lauren Kern, who has served as the app’s editor-in-chief since 2017 and previously held leadership roles at New York Magazine and The New York Times Magazine. Critics point to her background in liberal media as part of discussions about editorial influence.

Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Marsha Blackburn, have sent letters to Apple CEO Tim Cook seeking information about the app’s content selection process and whether internal reviews have been conducted regarding political bias.

Federal regulators are also paying attention: the Federal Trade Commission has expressed concern that alleged bias could violate consumer protection laws if users are misled about how content is curated, though enforcement action has not been announced.

Apple has said the platform includes content from thousands of sources and allows users to customize their preferences. The company has not issued a detailed public response to the recent allegations.

The ongoing debate highlights wider questions about how news platforms balance editorial oversight, algorithmic tools, and political diversity as they seek to serve large, diverse audiences in an increasingly polarized media environment.
