5 Shocks Proving Europe’s Super clubs Are No Longer Untouchable
European football’s power gap is shrinking as super clubs lose dominance. Arsenal and City reflect a new era of competitive balance.
European football may be entering a new era, one defined less by untouchable superclubs and more by competitive balance across the continent.
The long-held dominance of Europe’s superclubs appears to be fading, according to football analyst Kári Tulinius, who believes the gap in quality between elite teams and the rest has narrowed significantly in recent seasons.

“European football isn’t as stratified, quality-wise, as it was a few years ago,” Tulinius said. “The superclubs seemed to operate on another level, but now they’re back where everyone else is.”
While elite clubs still boast greater financial resources, Tulinius argues that money alone no longer guarantees easy victories. Today’s top teams must work far harder to secure results, even against opponents once considered inferior.
He pointed to Paris Saint-Germain as an example. Despite being one of Europe’s most talented squads, PSG have shown vulnerability when key players such as Ousmane Dembélé are unavailable—something that would have mattered far less during the peak of the superclub era.
“During that period, these issues only really came into play in clashes at the very top,” Tulinius said. “The disparity was so large that it barely affected most matches.”
The shift is also evident in England. Comparisons between Manchester City’s current side and the dominant City team featuring Yaya Touré, David Silva and Sergio Agüero highlight how much the game has evolved.
“Compare this City to the Touré-Silva-Agüero side,” Tulinius said. “It’s almost a different sport.”
Arsenal and Manchester City, once separated by financial and squad depth gaps, now find themselves competing on more even footing, reflecting a broader trend across Europe.
As tactics evolve and competition intensifies, European football may be witnessing the end of an era—and the beginning of a more unpredictable and compelling game.
