Police have identified the first four victims of the fire that broke out in a bar at a Swiss ski resort on New Year's Eve.

Police said the bodies of two Swiss women, aged 21 and 16, and two Swiss men, aged 18 and 16, have been released to their families.

Valais cantonal police said in a statement that the identifications were made possible by the "extensive" work of authorities and the Institute of Forensic Medicine, and that the process of identifying the remaining victims is ongoing.

Authorities have said that 40 people were killed and 119 others injured in the fire at Le Constellation in Crans-Montana. Many of the injured have been identified, but families are now anxiously awaiting news about those who are still missing.

An initial investigation into the cause of the fire suggests it may have been started by sparklers attached to champagne bottles that were placed too close to the ceiling.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin called it one of the country's "worst tragedies."

Further details about the identified victims, including their names, have not been released.

Among the dead and missing are several teenagers. Le Constellation was a popular spot among young people in the ski resort town, where the legal drinking age is 16.

On Friday, police said that 113 of the injured had been identified, including 71 Swiss, 14 French, and 11 Italian nationals.

An Italian teenage golfer was the first person confirmed to have died, although Swiss and Italian authorities have so far declined to officially confirm his death.
