Washington, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump announced he is withdrawing his endorsement of Republican Rep. Jeff Hurd of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, citing disagreement over trade policy and support for tariffs.

In a statement, Trump said the decision was driven by what he described as insufficient backing for his tariff policies, which he credited with strengthening the U.S. economy and protecting American industries.
“Taking back an endorsement is a difficult decision,” Trump said, adding that Hurd was “more interested in protecting foreign countries” than U.S. economic interests.
New Endorsement Announced
Trump simultaneously announced his full endorsement of Hope Scheppelman, a critical care nurse practitioner and U.S. Navy veteran, to replace Hurd in Congress.
Trump praised Scheppelman’s military service and healthcare background, calling her a strong advocate for America First policies, border security, energy development, and support for farmers and ranchers.
“Hope will do everything necessary to defend our country and ensure peace through strength,” Trump said.
Tariffs at the Center of the Dispute
Trump framed the endorsement shift as part of a broader commitment to maintaining aggressive trade tariffs, which he described as “unbelievably successful” in boosting American manufacturing and economic growth.
He contrasted the move with a previous endorsement reversal involving former Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks, referencing the 2022 Senate race ultimately won by Katie Britt.
Impact on the GOP Primary
The endorsement shake-up is expected to intensify the Republican primary contest in Colorado’s 3rd District, highlighting ongoing divisions within the GOP over trade, election policy, and party loyalty.
Scheppelman’s platform, as described by Trump, includes tax cuts, energy development, border security, election safeguards, and Second Amendment protections.
Trump concluded by emphasizing the broader stakes of the decision.
“These are the decisions that must be made to Make America Great Again,” he said.
