Honda has officially revived one of its most storied nameplates with the return of the Honda Prelude, a sixth-generation coupe that blends modern hybrid efficiency with the romantic appeal that once made the model a cult favourite.

Long remembered as Japan’s “perfect date car,” the Prelude built its reputation on refined comfort, sleek styling, and everyday usability. The new version stays true to that formula, even as it adopts an electrified powertrain and contemporary technology.

Under the hood is the same 2.0-liter petrol-electric setup found in the Honda Civic e:HEV, producing 181 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. Honda estimates a 0–62 mph time of 8.2 seconds, prioritizing smooth delivery and fuel efficiency over outright speed.

To inject character, engineers introduced an S+ Shift system that simulates eight gear ratios via paddle shifters, complete with a synthesized but engine-guided soundtrack. The result is a hybrid coupe that feels engaging without sacrificing refinement.

Handling benefits from adaptive dampers inspired by the Civic Type R and Honda’s Agile Handling Assist, which subtly brakes individual wheels to improve cornering precision. At 1,480 kg, the Prelude is lighter than many rivals, thanks to a focus on manual controls and restrained luxury options.

In a shrinking coupe market, the Prelude stands apart. Its closest competitors include the BMW 2 Series, Ford Mustang, and niche alternatives like the Alpine A110 or Toyota Supra

.

Priced from £40,995 in the UK, Honda is targeting modest annual sales of around 500 units, yet early demand in Japan has already exceeded expectations. Engineers hint that this may not be the final chapter, with future performance or fully electric variants possible.

For now, the new Prelude delivers something rare: a thoughtfully engineered hybrid coupe that embraces being different—precise to drive, comfortable to live with, and quietly confident in its niche.
